WAKEFIELD — Denise Y. Casey attended her first Town Council meeting this week in her capacity at Town Administrator. Earlier in the day, she was officially sworn in by Town Clerk Betsy Sheeran in a ceremony at Town Hall.

Casey succeeds Stephen P. Maio, who retired in July after 17 years as Town Administrator.

In August, the Town Council voted to appoint Casey to the position after an extensive search and selection process. Casey, a Danvers resident, was among three finalists presented to the Council by a Screening Committee.

Casey who has 27 years of experience in municipal management, told the Town Council this week that she has been “overwhelmed” by expressions of support and welcoming from the town, adding that she was attracted by the level of care and commitment that she has already seen in the community.

Casey most recently served as the Deputy Town Manager in North Andover. She previously served as the Assistant Town Manager in Wilmington and the Human Resources Director in Lexington. Casey is an adjunct professor at Suffolk University’s Institute for Public Service and Moakley Center Sawyer Business School. She has a master’s degree in public administration.

The Town Council also announced this week that Kevin Gill, who served as interim Town Administrator between Maio’s retirement and Casey’s start date, will now return to his previous role as Finance Director/Assistant Town Administrator.
