WAKEFIELD — There were no injuries but the residents of a West Side home have been temporarily displaced by a fire Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 4:07 p.m., the Fire Department received a 911 transfer from the police. The caller reported he had smoke coming from his roof and believed there was a fire in the house.
Engine 1, Ladder 1, Engine 2 and Car 3, under the command of Captain Paul Pronco, were dispatched for a reported house fire at 17 Outlook Rd.
Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke emanating from the eaves of the structure.
Captain Pronco assumed command and declared a working fire in the home.
The Engine 1 crew stretched a 1-3/4 line to the front door and entered the structure to find seat of fire. The fire was located inside a side wall above the large brick fireplace. Companies began to open-up the brick wall to get to the fire.
The Ladder 1 crew utilized ground ladders to gain access to the roof of the 1 1/2 story ranch and made a six-foot trench cut along the perimeter of the chimney, locating the main body of the fire. Companies deployed a 1 3/4 hose line to the roof to try and extinguish fire inside the wall while crews on the interior were trying to access fire within the walls.
The Engine 2 crew established a water supply to Engine 1 and assisted Engine 1 crew with locating and gaining access to fire.
An Engine company from Stoneham provided mutual aid and stood by as the rapid intervention team assisted with opening the wall to gain access to fire.
The fire was declared under control at approximately 4:40 p.m. with companies engaged in extensive overhaul, remaining on scene until 6:12 p.m.
Crews were able to stop the fire from traveling into and across the attic space which would have consumed the home in fire.
Due to the construction of the home and the brick construction of the large fireplace, the fire was very labor-intensive for crews. Chief Purcell credits the “immediate response and strong work of the first arriving companies” for stopping the fire and saving the home.
All occupants of the home were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported.
Wakefield Municipal Gas and light department responded to shut-down gas and power to building.
WFD’s fire investigative Unit assisted by the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
The home was secured by a board-up up contractor, and residents were assisted with temporary relocation by the Fire Department.
