ROCKPORT — The Lynnfield High field hockey team extended their unbeaten streak to seven games last Saturday afternoon as they blanked Rockport, 4-0, on the road.
With that win, the Pioneers improved to 10-0-2 in the Cape Ann League and 10-1-2 overall.
The Pioneers, who finished a five-game road stretch, netted three goals in the opening half.
With 11:04 remaining in the opening quarter, Mia Capodilupo scored assisted by Lauren Mattia.
Izzy Fiorentino then had the next two goals. Her first one came with 6:57 remaining in the first quarter. Her second one came with only 20 seconds left in the second quarter. The first goal was assisted by Capodilupo while Zoe O’Brien and Sophia Morgese assisted on the other one.
“That, 100 percent, was the key goal,” stated Pioneers head coach Kerri Doherty about that third tally. “That goal allowed me to make some changes at the half that I wouldn’t make leading 2-0.”
The fourth goal was scored by Olivia Ellison with 5:24 left in the third assisted by Gianna Bridges. For Bridges, it was the her first-career assist.
“I was so happy for her,” said Doherty, about Bridges. “She has such a good attitude.”
Pioneer goalie, Bridget McGee, had her fourth shutout of the season as she turned back four Viking shots on net.
Doherty was also happy with the play of Addie Wolf, Chloe Bergeron and Grace Allen.
On a wet day on Oct. 8, the Pioneers shut out Essex Tech, 3-0, up in Danvers to complete the season sweep over the Hawks.
Allen opening the scoring with 10:52 remaining in the first quarter assisted by Mattia and Nola Maney off a corner.
The same combination made it 2-0 with 1:42 left in the third and that was also on a corner.
“We work on corners every day and both of those were well-executed,” pointed out Doherty.
Cameron Munion had the final goal with 12:41 left in the game and that one was unassisted.
McGee only had to make one stop in net as Lynnfield controlled the territorial play.
The game scheduled for Columbus Day at home against rival North Reading was rained out and made up on Oct. 14 (result not available as of press time).
On Oct. 16, the Pioneers host Masconomet in a non-league game at 4 p.m.
They then welcome Amesbury on Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m. as they return to CAL action.
The Pioneers entered this week ranked 10th in the MIAA division 3 power rankings.
