Field hockey teams earns hard-fought tie against Triton

LYNNFIELD — On Tuesday afternoon, the North Reading field hockey team visited rival Lynnfield on a damp, cool day as the game was postponed due to heavy rain the day before.
It was a rough day for the Hornets as they were shut out, 4-0, by the Pioneers.
Lynnfield, who won the first match-up, 2-0, back on Sept. 17, scored once in the first half and three more times in the second stanza.
Their first goal came with 12:52 left in the first quarter as Izzy Fiorentino found the back of the Hornet net.
They made it 2-0 with 3:14 remaining in the third on a goal by Sophie Morgese.
In the fourth, the Pioneers scored with 10:24 and 2:43 left as Cameron Munion scored both Pioneer goals.
“We had a strong first half then crumbled a bit in the second,” admitted Hornets head coach Mikayla Allen. “Lynnfield looked really good.”
With that loss, the Hornets’ record dropped to 9-5-2 overall and 6-5-2 in the Cape Ann League. Meanwhile, the Pioneers improved to 11-0-2 in the Cape Ann League and 11-1-2 overall.
North Reading goalie, Thea Panousos, made seven saves.
On Oct. 8, the Hornets tied Triton, 2-2, up in Byfield. With that tie, the Hornets went 1-0-1 against the Vikings this season as North Reading won the first meeting, 2-1, back on Sept. 8.
The Vikings scored in the opening minute of the game but, thanks to Alaina Driscoll, the Hornets were able to salvage a tie. Driscoll scored both goals for the team. Kara Russell had the first assist and the second tally was unassisted. Both North Reading goals came off corners.
Panousos had a busy day in net with eight stops.
“After they scored that first goal the action was back-and-fourth,” said Allen.
On Oct. 20, the Hornets host Hamilton-Wenham at 5:30 p.m.
They then wrap up the regular season on Oct. 22 as they visit Essex Tech at 3 p.m. The Hornets are looking for the season sweep against the Hawks as they beat them, 3-0, back on Sept. 22.
North Reading entered the week ranked 28th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings. The top 32 teams, regardless of overall record, at the end of the regular season automatically qualify.
