LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield Public Library is hosting a series of classes designed to help seniors use the Internet safely and confidently.
Lynnfield High School senior Lily Williams created the Stay Safe and Smart online classes as part of her Gold Award project for Girl Scout Troop 82559, led by Diane Courtney.
“This class will meet two more times: Oct. 23 from 6-7:20 p.m. and Nov. 1 from 2-3:20 p.m.,” said Lily. “Any adult can attend and there is no need to sign up.”
In the first two classes, Lily said attendees have learned how to spot online scams, avoid fraud, and how to navigate Google and its applications. The Oct. 23 class will be centered around understanding the pros and cons of artificial intelligence (AI), as well as how people can use it to help with tasks. On Nov. 1, people will learn about creating strong passwords and recognizing fake news and misinformation.
“Whether you’re online daily or just getting started, this class will give you the tools to stay safe and informed in today’s digital world,” said Lily. “No tech experience needed — all are welcome!”
For seniors with specific questions about their devices, password setup, how to use apps or any other tech questions, they can sign up to come to Lynnfield High School and work with the Computer Science students as a “help desk” on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 10-11 a.m. Seniors can sign up through the Senior Center by emailing jbennett@lynnfieldma.gov.
