AMESBURY — The red-hot Lynnfield High field hockey team shut out Amesbury, 6-0, on the road on a wet day on Monday.
With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 12-0-2 in the Cape Ann League and 12-1-3 overall. They also ran their unbeaten streak to 10 games.
Mia Capodilupo opened the scoring in the first quarter assisted by Sophia Morgese.
Lynnfield broke the game open in the second quarter scoring three times.
Senior captain Izzy Fiorentino, off a corner, had the first one assisted by Lauren Mattia and Morgese. Capodilupo then netted her second tally again with Morgese picking up her third assist of the afternoon.
Fiorentino made it 4-0 heading into halftime with Mattia assisting.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Pioneers scored twice in the fourth.
Mattia got the fifth one off a corner. Then, Gianna Bridges scored her first varsity goal assisted by Nola Maney.
“We had a slow start in the first quarter but turned it up in the second,” said Pioneers head coach Kerri Doherty, whose squad is one win away from clinching the CAL Kinney Division. “We did a good job of converting our one-times from crossing passes from the right side.”
Bridget McGee was the winning goalie playing the first half as she had three saves. Olivia Sylvester who didn’t face a shot on net in the second half, mopped up.
We had awesome play by Grace (Allen), Chloe (Bergeron), Nola (Maney) and Hayden (Valiton) who consistently sets the tone defensively every game,” said Doherty.
On Oct. 16, the Pioneers had their Play for the Cure game against visiting Masconomet at Pioneer Stadium. The game ended in a scoreless tie.
“It was a great back-and-fourth game,” said Doherty, about the non-league contest. “They are a division above us (Division 2) and are ranked fifth in the power rankings. The speed and the level of play was amazing.”
Along with it being the Play for a Cure game, it was also Lynnfield Youth Field Hockey Day as well.
“It was great to see the young girls out in the stands,” said Doherty, whose team wore pink jerseys. “It was a real community event .”
McGee recorded her sixth shutout of the season with seven saves on the day and she faced six penalty corners.
Doherty awarded her the game ball afterwards.
“She also saved a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter,” added Doherty.
The money raised in that game will go to the fight against breast cancer.
On Oct. 14, the Pioneers blanked North Reading, 4-0, at home to complete the season sweep over the rival Hornets.
Their first goal came with 12:52 left in the first quarter as Fiorentino found the back of the Hornet net.
They made it 2-0 with 3:14 remaining in the third on a goal by Morgese.
In the fourth, the Pioneers scored with 10:24 and 2:43 left as Cameron Munion scored both Pioneer goals.
“We had great ball movement that game,” recalled Doherty.
McGee did not have to make any saves in net as Lynnfield dominated the territorial play.
On Oct. 2, the Pioneers host Pentucket at 6 p.m. on Senior Night trying to clinch the CAL Kinney title. Before the game, the five Lynnfield 12th-graders will be honored.
The Pioneers are looking for the season sweep over the Panthers as they won the first match-up, 6-0, back on Sept. 22.
They wrap up the regular season on Oct. 24 with a non-league against Bevrely at home. That game will start at 4 p.m.
The Pioneers entered this week ranked 11th in the MIAA Div. 3 power rankings.
