WAKEFIELD — The latest power rankings for the state tournament were released by the MIAA yesterday afternoon.
Two of the five power-ranked sports are currently projected to make their respective tournaments in Wakefield with one more looking to make a late-season run.
The volleyball team has the top ranking in town with a No. 7 in Div. 2. The Warriors improved to 14-4 with a 3-1 win over Stoneham on Monday, their fifth victory in a row and eighth in their last nine. Wakefield has two matches remaining, against Watertown at home tonight and in Wilmington on Friday night. With two victories, the Warriors would have a chance to climb past Marblehead (14-2) at No. 6 and perhaps into the top five. The top five in D2 are Oliver Ames (18-0), Duxbury (19-0), Longmeadow (16-0), King Philip (12-6) and Minnechaug (16-3).
The football team remains in the tournament as of the latest rankings. Wakefield (3-3) is No. 12 in Div. 4. The top 16 ranked teams make it in football. The Warriors are coming off a close, 35-30 loss to Wilmington (5-1, No. 3 in D6) on Friday night. The Warriors have a massive game in Stoneham (4-2, No. 11 in D6) this Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The top five D4 football teams are Scituate (5-1), Tewksbury (6-0), Duxbury (3-3), Canton (4-2) and Burlington (6-0). If the tournament started this week, Wakefield would travel to Burlington in the first round. That is unlikely to happen however, as the two teams will meet in the regular season finale next week at BHS, which should cause movement in the rankings for both teams.
The boys’ soccer team is making a push to make the tournament. The Warriors (6-5-3) have three games remaining to make the bracket by either finishing at .500 or better or by being ranked in the top 32. They are currently No. 39 in Div. 2. The Warriors have won three of their last four. They have a huge game set for Senior Night tonight, 7 p.m. against Watertown (7-1-7, No. 16 in D3). A win would punch Wakefield’s ticket to the playoffs. The rivals played to a wild, 2-2 draw in their first matchup on Sept. 24. The Warriors finish up next week with trips to Wilmington on Monday and Chelmsford on Wednesday. The top five teams in D2 are Oliver Ames (10-0-3), Northampton (12-0-3), Duxbury (11-2-1), Holliston (9-3-3) and Longmeadow (10-1-5).
The girls’ soccer and field hockey teams are currently on the outside of the tournament picture. The girls’ soccer team has three games left to finish strong and the field hockey team concludes their season tomorrow at home against Wilmington.
