LYNNFIELD — Last Saturday evening, the Lynnfield High boys’ soccer team hosted Rockport on Lynnfield Youth Soccer day as the Pioneer girls’ team played right before.
The game ended in a scoreless tie.
With that result, the Pioneers’ record went to 9-1-5 overall and 8-1-5 in the Cape Ann League. The Vikings, meanwhile, went to 7-4-4 overall and 6-3-1 in the league. Rockport is in the CAL Baker Division.
“They are a physical team with good size,” said Pioneers head coach Brent Munroe. “This game was pretty even and we were missing three starters due to injuries so I was happy with the result.”
Munroe, whose team is in Division 3 feels that the Vikings should make a lot of noise in the state tournament.
“They are in D5 so they should have a long run,” said Munroe.
Pioneer goalkeeper, Dino Gesamondo, made eight saves in net.
“Dino and the rest of the defense played well,” said Munroe.
Along with it being Lynnfield Youth Soccer Day, it was also the Pioneers Senior Day as the 10 Lynnfield 12th-graders were honored before the game.
In a huge game on Oct. 14, the Pioneers edged rival North Reading, 1-0, at home as it was a battle between the two top teams in the CAL Kinney Division.
Lynnfield was able to salvage a split of the season series as the Hornets won, 1-0, back on Sept. 18.
“That was our biggest win of the year,” stated Munroe. “The kids had a great effort against a very good team.”
The hero was Ryan Giacobbi as the senior defender scored in the 74th-minute.
“I was so happy for him,” said Munroe, as it was Giacobbi’s first goal of the year.
The goal came off a corner kick by Alex Benito that Giacobbi headed in.
Gesamondo posted his second shutout of the year making 11 saves.
Along with Gesamondo, Munroe was also pleased with the play of defenseman Ben Clancy.
On Oct. 23, the Pioneers visit Pentucket at 4:30 p.m. Lynnfield is looking for the season sweep over the Panthers as they won the first match-up, 5-1, on Sept. 22. That is the final CAL game for the team.
The Pioneers then wrap up the regular season on Oct. 27 as they visit Masconomet at 4 p.m. in a playoff tune-up.
LHS is ranked No. 13 in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings.
The top 32 teams in each division, regardless of record, automatically qualify for the state tournament as the end of the regular season.
