NORTH READING — On Monday evening, the North Reading High field hockey team had its Senior Night as they welcomed Hamilton-Wenham. Before the game, the seven Hornet 12th-graders — Alaina Driscoll, Sophia El-Sheikh, Lucia Mini, Josie Lambert, Thea Panousos, Natalia Panousos and Ella Donovan — were honored.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie as this was the lone meeting between the two schools this year since the Generals are in the Cape Ann League Baker Division.

With that result, the Hornets’ record went to 9-5-3 overall and 6-5-3 in the CAL. The Generals, meanwhile, went to 6-7-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the CAL.

“They have a new coach this year and they looked awesome,” said Hornets head coach Mikayla Allen, whose squad is in third place in the CAL Kinney. “They also have a great goalie.”

Hamilton-Wenham scored first early in the opening quarter.

The Hornets tied it up late in the third off a corner as Lambert scored assisted by Kara Russell.

Although the Hornets goal did come off a corner, the team struggled overall on corners as they were only 1-for-10.

“We executed the corners well,” explained Allen. “However, we have been struggling to put home rebounds.”

North Reading goalie, Thea Panousos, made five saves.

The Hornets visited Essex Tech on Oct. 22 in the final game of the regular season (result not available at press time).

Next week, the seedings will come out for the state tournament.

North Reading entered the week ranked 26th in the MIAA Div. 3 power rankings. The top 32 teams, regardless of overall record at the end of the regular season automatically qualify.
