LYNNFIELD — In a non-league game last Friday afternoon, the Lynnfield High field hockey team shut out Beverly, 3-0, at home in the final game of the regular season.
With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 14-1-3 overall.
Lynnfield scored once in the first half and twice in the second against the Panthers.
Grace Allen opening the scoring with 9:18 remaining in the first quarter. Lauren Mattia assisted on the play.
The score stayed that way until there was 3:19 left in the third quarter as Mattia picked up her second assist as Izzy Fiorentino scored.
With 2:09 left in the game, Mattia assisted on Cameron Munion’s tally.
“She did a good job of threading the needle,” said Pioneers head coach Kerri Doherty, about Mattia. “She was able to create good opportunities for her teammates.”
Bridget McGee posted her 9th shutout of the year.
Doherty was pleased with the play of Nola Maney, Allison Sweeney, Chloe Bergeron and Sophia Morgese.
“This was the best game we have played all season,” stated Doherty. “We played good recovery defense and played unselfishly.”
On Oct. 22, the Pioneers shut out Pentucket, 2-0, at home in their Cape Ann League finale at Pioneer Stadium.
That win cliched the CAL Kinney Division title on the team’s Senior Night.
“That is our first league title since 2014,” pointed out Doherty, who was ecstatic that her squad was able to go undefeated in the league this fall. “That was one of our goals back in August.”
The Pioneers finished at 13-0-2 in the league as they also completed the season sweep over the Panthers.
After a scoreless first quarter, Maney scored an unassisted goal with 8:54 left in the second quarter.
Fiorentino, a senior co-captain, had the other goal with 2:22 remaining in the third on a rebound.
McGee had three saves.
Doherty was impressed with the play of seniors Erin Golden and Zoe O’Brien, along with captains Munion and Lily Alves.
“It was very emotional for the kids,” said Doherty, as the five Pioneer 12th-graders were honored before the game. “All of the seniors started and got to play the last several minutes of the game.”
The field hockey brackets were released on Tuesday morning. Lynnfield (14-1-3) earned the No. 10 seed in Div. 3. They will host No. 23 Old Rochester Regional (9-7-1) in the first round, date and time to be announced.
“This team has a lot of heart and they believe in themselves,” said Doherty, who feels that her squad can make a lot of noise in the tournament if they play to their potential.
