WRENTHAM — Last Saturday afternoon, the Lynnfield High girls’ cross country team traveled down to the Wrentham Developmental Center to compete in the Cape Ann League Championship Meet.
In the varsity race that was 5,000 meters long (3.1 miles), there were 61 total runners on a crisp, sunny day.
Lynnfield finished in 7th place out of eight schools with a score of 139. Hamilton-Wenham, the Cape Ann League Baker Division champions, won the event with a score of 48 points.
Abby Lopez led the Pioneers as she had a time of 19:59 to come in 5th place overall.
Maeve Wertz was 26th (22:52) while Shea Moore captured 36th (23:34).
Sophie Kennison was the 4th Pioneer to cross the finish line at 24:06 (38 overall) while Bella Giacobbi placed 44th with a time of 24:29.
“We had some great personal-record performances as the five runners all accomplished that feat; however we fell short against the two teams who were really our competition,” said Pioneers head coach Liane Cook, who was proud of her team’s effort. “Amesbury, who we beat and, Manchester-Essex, who we lost to by a very close score, both beat us in this meet.”
The next event for Lynnfield is the Division 3A Championships at Fort Devens in Ayer on Nov. 8 at 2:45 p.m.
In the regular season, the Pioneers were 3-2 as they finished in third place in the Cape Ann League Baker Division.
