MELROSE—It was a record-breaking week for the Melrose High girls’ varsity volleyball team, no strangers to playoffs, and they officially kick off their Div. 2 post season journey tonight with a road opener in Hingham. They enter on the heels of two straight league wins, to finish their regular season at 13-7.

On Tuesday, the MIAA released their Div. 2 playoff brackets and Melrose has drawn the No. 17 spot, and, for the first time in several years, they are traveling in the opening round of playoffs.

But it was a historic moment on Friday, Oct. 24 when Melrose senior captain Sabine Wenzel broke the single season kill record at Melrose High with 342 kills. Wenzel, a Div. 1 commit, also leads the state in kills with a current total of 348, making her a real threat against any Div. 2 rival.

Melrose grabbed two league wins last week against Stoneham and Watertown (the game in which Wenzel earned her feat) to finish 3rd in the Freedom League.

Friday evening was Senior Night and the team happily honored their four upperclassmen, departing players Emme Boyer, Sabine Wenzel, Adele Akland and Juliet Chevalier. It was a senior special indeed as many of them were key in the 25-17, 25-12, 25-16 win. Wenzel led with 7 kills while Boyer and Chevalier had 5 and 3 kills apiece. Underclassmen Adriana Santoriello, Ella Friedlaender both contributed with 5 and Elise Marchais had 4. Melrose benefitted from great serving from Alisa Doutovic, who was lights out, along with teammates Maggie Shoemaker and Anna Burns.

Melrose was equally as dominant in their game against Stoneham just days earlier when they beat Spartans in sets of 25-8, 25-11 and 25-12. Wenzel was dominant with 17 kills and Melrose saw some great serving from Danielle DiGiorgio who was 100% at the line, along with Alisa Dautovic who had 21 service points. In the game, setter Sadie Smith had 27 assists.

Despite the two wins, Melrose (11-5 ML) must settle for Wakefield winning the Freedom League, for the first time ever, this year. Despite Melrose beating the Warriors early in the season, Wakefield put on a mid season run that led them to a strong 16-4 season.

Melrose will hope that in playoffs “all records are out the window” and they’ll face a rather unknown Hingham team tonight, who hosts Melrose with a record of 12-9 and plays in a fairly challenging Patriot League where they rank 4th. Melrose will hope to haunt the Harbormen this Halloween. The winner of this game may advance to play No. 1 seed Oliver Ames, in a game that would also be on the road for Melrose.
