LYNNFIELD — It was a successful playoff opener for the Lynnfield High field hockey team on Saturday as they beat guest Old Rochester, 5-2, on a cool, sunny day in the MIAA Division 3 Round of 32.

With the win, the 10th-seeded Pioneers improved to 15-1-3.

Meanwhile, the 23rd-seeded Bulldogs, whose school is located in the southeastern town of Mattapoisett, ended the year at 9-8-1.

The game was not as close as the final score would indicate as the Bulldogs scored both of their goals against the Pioneers’ reserves in the game’s final five minutes.

With 4:34 left in the opening quarter, Lauren Mattia scored, unassisted, with a reverse chip shot to the top right corner of the Bulldog net to open the scoring.

“It was a gorgeous shot,” stated Pioneers head coach Kerri Doherty.

Up 1-0 at the half, the Pioneers pulled away in the third scoring four times.

With 8:05 remaining, Izzy Fiorentino made it 2-0 assisted by Sophia Morgese off a tip.

Just 59 seconds later, Grace Allen sent home a rebound off the goalkeeper’s pads for the third tally.

Morgese had the fourth goal  assisted by Cameron Munion with 5:03 left as they scored the three goals in only a  three minute span.

Mattia had her second goal of the day with 2:35 left off a corner. Allen and Nola Maney were both credited with the assist.

Lynnfield goalkeeper Bridget McGee made two saves as it was 5-0 when she left the game.

“We executed our game plan very effectively,” said Doherty, who was very pleased with her team’s performance.

The Pioneers visited 7th-seeded Hanover (14-3-0) in the Round of 16 on Tuesday night (result not available at press time). The winner advances to the quarterfinals where they will play the winner of No. 2 Sandwich vs. No. 18 Dedham.
