BOXFORD — Seniors Leo Romanski and Conrad Gerber were the two North Reading High golf representatives at the Cape Ann League Open at Far Corner in West Boxford last week. Both players played at Far Corner the day before in the Division 3 North Sectionals.
“Playing there the day before helped them but the conditions made it tough,” said Hornets head coach Jon Kiniry. “It was cold and windy both days and it was a little colder the second day.”
There were 24 total competitors in the meet as each CAL school had two representatives.
Both Hornets golfers had successful days as they each finished in the top 10.
Unlike the sectionals where they go by stroke total, the CAL Open goes by the Stableford scoring system that the league uses in the regular season (six points for a birdie, four for a par, two for a bogey and one for a double bogey).
Romanski scored 64 points to place fourth while Gerber tied for ninth with 58.
Two Triton freshman, Jack Gagne and Evan Allen, came in first and second. Gagne shot a three over par 74 (69 points) and Allen shot a 75 (68 points).
“Both Leo and Conrad are both big-ball hitters so that course suits them well,” said Kiniry. “The greens are big and fair.”
As opposed to the sectionals, the CAL Open is much more laid back and makes for a fun atmosphere according to Kiniry.
“Everybody knows each other and it is a fun event to watch,” said Kiniry, who just finished his second year at the helm.
In the regular season, the Hornets went 1-12 as nearly their entire starting roster was turned over from last year’s Cape Ann League Kinney Division title team.
