Girls’ soccer team gets ready for Old Rochester in first round matchup

By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI

LYNNFIELD — On Nov. 1, the brackets came out for the MIAA Division 3 girls’ soccer state tournament. Lynnfield received the 6th slot and will open the tournament at Pioneer Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m.

The Pioneers will host No. 27 Old Rochester who defeated No. 38 Pittsfield 2-1 in a preliminary round game on Monday.

Old Rochester enters the game at 15-5-1.

Lynnfield went 13-2-3 overall and 13-2-1 in the Cape Ann League as they tied Newburyport for first place in the CAL Kinney Division.

The Pioneer offense is led by juniors Ava Damiani, Kaylee Barrett and Giada Antidormi who are the top three point-scorers this fall. Barrett and Antidormi are midfielders while Damiani is a striker.

Lynnfield’s goalkeeper is Victoria Minor who went 10-2-2 in net.

With the final game of the regular season taking place on Oct. 25 when they tied guest Marblehead, 1-1, head coach Mark Vermont scheduled a couple of scrimmages last week to keep his roster sharp going into states.

On Oct. 29, they hosted Masconomet. Then, two days later, they welcomed Danvers.

“Those scrimmages allowed us to settle our feet and, most importantly, work on our penalty kicks in case of a shootout,” explained Vermont. “We are healthy coming into the tournament and excited to get going after having 10 days off.”

If the Pioneers can win their first round game, they will host the Round of 16 game as well later this week (date and time unknown as of press time) against the winner of No. 11 Auburn vs. No. 22 Weston.

Last season, when they were in Division 4, the Pioneers reached the state semifinals before falling, 3-0, to Hamilton-Wenham.
