NORTH READING — The NRHS girls’ basketball team pushed their record to 6-1 with a thrilling 51-48 double overtime victory over the visiting Manchester-Essex Hornets on January 9. Junior Mia DeNofrio led the way with a career high 16 points, eight of which came in the overtime periods. Fellow junior Casey McAuliffe contributed 12 points.
Pound Boston Latin Academy, 61-42
The Hornets returned to the court on January 10 for a road matchup with the Boston Latin Academy Dragons. Much like the first matchup, NRHS won easily by a score of 61-42.
Sophomore Allie Grasso was terrific with a game and career-high 19 points. Casey McAuliffe had another game in double digits with 14 points. Sophomore Lauren Sullivan poured in 13 points and freshman Julia Howse was outstanding with 9 points off the bench.
Extend Spectacular Winning Streak to 7 Games
Allie Grasso recorded a double-double with 12 points and an outstanding 10 steals as the Hornets extended their winning streak to an incredible seventh game in a row with a 40-27 road victory over the Lynnfield Pioneers on Friday night. With the win North Reading improves to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the CAL.
Winning Streak Snapped by Masco, 46-28
The Hornets suffered their first loss in eight games as the Masconomet Chieftains beat them 46-28 on Monday. Lauren Sullivan led North Reading with 9 points.
The NRHS offense struggled mightily in the first half with just three made field goals, but their defense kept them in the game and they were only down 16-9 at the half.
North Reading fought back to within 20-18 midway through the third quarter. But unfortunately, it was all Masco the rest of the way. The Chieftains closed the game on a 26-10 run and cruised to victory.
The Hornets have a big home divisional game against Newburyport on Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by a trip to Georgetown on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
