Two men arrested in theft of tires, rims

WAKEFIELD — Two Boston men were arrested early Saturday morning and charged with attempting to steal the tires and rims from two Hondas on Peasant Street after an alert resident spotted the men in her driveway just before 3 a.m. and called police. The witness also saw the men enter a blue vehicle.

As Officer Jeanette DiMasi arrived on the scene, she stopped a blue Honda CRV that was pulling away from the address. The driver, Jeancarlos Cruz, of 4 Abbotsford St. in Boston, provided his driver’s license. The passenger was identified as Luis Jose Serret of 65 Homestead St. in Boston.

At this point, Officer Matthew Malone also arrived on the scene. According to police, Cruz claimed that he was going to visit a friend but didn’t know the address. As police were talking to the two men, Cruz suddenly put the key back in the ignition and took off. The passenger side door was open and hit a tree. The car sped down Bryant Street but police were again able to stop the car in the area of 258 Main St.

Sgt. Jon Burnham also arrived on scene at this point. Both Cruz and Serrett were arrested and placed in handcuffs. Meanwhile, back on Pleasant Street, Officer Malone located two Honda Accords in driveways near the location of the original call. All the lug nuts but one were removed from each tire on both cars. Milk crates were also located in one of the driveways. Thieves typically leave vehicles on milk crates after stealing the tires and rims.

In the car occupied by by the suspects, police found a car jack and a lug wrench. Also found was a wallet belonging to an Aborn Avenue resident and a wallet from a Waltham resident.

Both Cruz and Serrett were charged with felony breaking and entering to a vehicle in the nightime, attempted larceny of tires and rims, possession of burglarious instruments and receiving stolen property valued at $1,200.

Cruz was additionally charged with reckless operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stop for police.

Neither main was able to raise the $10,000 bail and Both Cruz and Serrett were arraigned this morning in Malden District Court.

At about 11:15 a.m. Friday morning, police arrested a 44-year-old Malden man on a warrant in the area of Main and Forest streets.

At about 12:15 p.m. on Friday, a Brewster Road man walked into the police station to report the theft of an 1815 antique book valued at about $7,000 from his home. The man said that he had a cleaning service at the house earlier and believed that there may be a connection. He told police that he would reach out to the the owner of the cleaning company before pursuing the matter further.

At about 3 p.m. on Friday police responded to a two-car crash at Salem and New Salem streets. One citation was issued but no further information was available.

Just after midnight on Saturday morning, police took a 53-year-old Wakefield man into protective custody after receiving reports of a man down and possibly intoxicated on Church Street.

At about 12:45 Saturday morning, a clerk at the Circle K store on Salem Street in Montrose told police that a customer had threatened him before driving off in a black Jeep.

A 51-year-old Reading man was arrested for drunk driving after police stopped the vehicle he was driving for speeding on Lowell Street at about 1:30 Saturday morning. Police attempted to stop the Mazda pickup, but the driver continued onto Route 128 North before pulling over. While speaking with the driver, he officer detected an odor of alcohol. The driver claimed he was heading to Reading but could not explain why he got on the highway. He admitted to having consumed three beers.

After failing a field sobriety test, James Basford of 89 Oakland Street in Reading was arrested for OUI. He was also charged with speeding.

At about 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, a Salem Street resident reported tires and rims stolen from his Honda Accord overnight. The car was left on milk crates.

At about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, a 30-year-old Dorchester man was taken into protective custody after police observed him walking unsteadily on Main Street in the area of Meriam Street. The officer spoke to the man and confirmed that he was heavily intoxicated.

There were no injuries, but both cars had to be towed after a crash at Lowell Street and Garden Lane just before 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Police said that a 2018 Ford Fusion driven by a Malden woman was heading south on Lowell Street when a 2011 Honda Pilot driven by a Wakefield woman pulled out of Garden Lane and the cars collided.

Just after 8 p.m. on Saturday, police were called to the Lakeside Inn on North Avenue after staff reported an intoxicated man in the lobby of the hotel refusing to leave. Police found the man to be highly intoxicated and possibly also suffering from the effects of the heat. Officers took the 60-year-old Wakefield man into protective custody.

A little before 8:30 on Saturday night, police went to the Dockside Restaurant in Greenwood on a report of a man causing a disturbance in the restaurant. A witness told arriving officers that the man had left and was walking south on Main Street. Officers located the man who was stumbling and heavily intoxicated. The 37-year-old Wakefield man was taken into protective custody and later released to his father.

Police arrested a 27-year-old Methuen man after he was found running around naked in the Greenwood Plaza on Sunday night at about 9:30. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, indecent exposure and assault and battery. No further information was available on the incident.

Police will summonse a 23-year-old Wakefield woman to court for driving on a suspended license and driving an uninsured vehicle with a revoked license after stopping the Toyota Corolla she was driving on Middle Street just before 2 a.m. this morning.

Firefighters had another busy weekend, answering 41 calls, 29 of which were for medical assistance. At least one of those medical conditions was caused by heat exhaustion.

Crews went to the office building at 2 Pleasure Island Road three times on Saturday beginning around 5 a.m. because of a malfunctioning fire alarm system.

On Friday, a fire alarm system malfunction was reported at Heron Pond around 1 p.m. Also on Friday, firefighters went to a minor motor vehicle accident at Salem and New Salem streets around 3 p.m. and dealt with a car lockout at the parking lot outside Breakheart Reservation on Hemlock Road around 9 p.m.

On Saturday, crews went to a Cooper Street home around 2:20 a.m. because of a malfunctioning fire alarm system; to Line Road around 3:40 p.m. after being told someone heard a smoke alarm sounding (it was actually a car alarm); to Woodbury Road around 6:30 p.m. to help someone who was locked out of an apartment, and to the intersection of Lowell Street and Garden Lane after a two-vehicle accident.

On Sunday around 1 p.m. firefighters went to the area of Cedar and Gould streets after being told of heavy smoke. They found someone had been grilling food.

And this morning around 8, a crew went to the apartment building at 26 Crescent St. after a water issued developed in the facility’s boiler room.
