WILMINGTON — The North Reading High Cheerleaders took first place in the MSAA North Regional Championship last weekend to advance to the Massachusetts 2020 Winter Cheerleading State Championship for the Small Coed Division being held on Sunday, March 15.

“This is the first time in my coaching history that both winter and fall teams have won the North Regional Title in the same year,” said 10th-year head coach Katie Roy. “We are going into states with the 3rd highest score in our division. We are very much in the mix for a state title.”

The Hornets topped Swampscott and will now compete against a larger field at the state championship held at Worcester State University. If they place this weekend, they would move on to New England Cheer championship the following weekend.

“We choose to do this sport. It’s two minutes and 30 seconds to do what we love,” says senior co-captain Lacey Stebbins. “We proved to ourselves that we didn’t work this hard to not do our best.”

The team is continuing to raise funds for an upcoming trip the Nationals in Asbury Park, New Jersey on March 28.

“Coach Katie has taught me and my teammates so much and she has pushed us to be our best selves and never settle for less, both on and off the mat,” says senior co-captain Alexis Jones. “I am so grateful for all the experiences cheer has brought me.”
