The kids in the Class of 2020 are getting tremendously shortchanged because of the restrictions made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Because schools across the state are now closed for the current school year, all indications point to the fact that the annual rites of passage we’ve taken for granted, like attending the prom and its accompanying Grand March as well as ceremonies honoring academic and athletic accomplishments, the final dramatic stage performance, concerts by our talented young musicians, and the entire spring high school sports season will not be held. And the traditional graduation ceremony will likely be transformed too.
The Class of 2020 has accomplished just as much as any preceding classes but under extraordinary circumstances. Everyone empathizes with each class member and certainly wishes them nothing but the best in these completely trying times.
To help take the sting out of the “new normal,” this week, the Transcript has announced our plan to honor this year’s high school seniors with a 2020 Senior Class Supplement to be published in June. These coronavirus restrictions also affect our ability to take the graduation and prom pictures readers have come to expect to see featured in our end-of-the-school year publications.
So we are asking for photographs of seniors — individual and group shots from in and out of school — that highlight their senior year to be used in our supplement. Please Include a brief description of each submission, identify the people in each photo and email them at their actual file size to: seniors2020@rcn.com by Friday, May 22. Since we cover North Reading, Wakefield, Melrose and Lynnfield, please mention the name of the community in the subject line. Remember: “We Are N-R,” and most of all, we’re in this together.
