Town election is Tuesday

NORTH READING — The annual Town Election is Tuesday, June 23 and polls will be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Theresa’s Parish Hall, 63 Winter St.

It was postponed from the first Tuesday in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic and polling hours were pared back to limit the time spent at the polls by the workers. Normally, there are at least two shifts of poll workers between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. All five candidates are running unopposed and had their nomination papers certified by the Town Clerk by the March 17 deadline.

As a public service, the Transcript runs candidate’s statements free of charge to each person running for office. This year, three of the five candidates responded. Not choosing to provide a statement were incumbent Community Planning Commissioner Christopher Hayden, who is running for a three-year term, and incumbent Town Moderator John Murphy, who is running for a one-year term.

This year, all voters also had the option to apply for an Early Vote ballot or an absentee ballot, which must be delivered to the polls by 6 p.m. on election day. Voters have until noon on Monday to apply. Complete instructions are printed elsewhere in today’s Transcript.
