NORTH READING — The weather cleared just in time yesterday to warm up the links at Thomson Country Club, the Wakefield High golf team’s home turf, for a rematch between the Warriors and Stoneham. Twenty-four hours after defeating the Spartans in the first match of 2020, Wakefield stayed in rhythm and moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 48-24 victory.
Similar to Tuesday’s contest, Wakefield won nine out of 10 individual matchups.
Wakefield’s two best scores of the day belonged to seniors Cal Tryder and Oliver Miller, each hitting a 37 on Thomson’s fast and narrow Par 36 front nine. Tryder won his matchup 6-3 while Miller was victorious at 7.5-1.5.
Tino Rossetti had the next best score, firing a 40 from Wakefield’s number five spot and also winning 7.5-1.5.
Luke Hopkins and Jack Ryan both shot a 41. Ryan dropped his matchup to Stoneham’s top golfer and Hopkins won 6.5-2.5.
Howie Melanson had another steady round with a 43 good for a 5.5-3.5 win. Chris Power (51, 5-4) and Charlie Shea (52, 7-2) also both moved to 2-0, finishing strong once again. Jacob Barrett and Donovan Foley both won their matchups 5-1.
Wakefield will take their 2-0 record into next week’s home and away matchup against Watertown. The Raiders are also 2-0 after beating Wilmington twice this week. Wakefield and Watertown will play Thomson on Monday at 3:30 p.m. before going to Watertown’s Oakley Country Club on Thursday at 3 p.m.
