NORTH READING — In their final game of the season on Aug. 3, the North Reading Northeast Baseball League team blanked Dracut by a final of 6-0 at North Reading High School. With that win, the Hornets finished at 9-5 as they were able to get a split of the season series against the Middies.
Tim McCarthy was the story in this game as the pitcher threw a complete-game shutout.
“With Tim and Ryan (Baker) pitching, the North Reading High team should have a good season next year,” said North Reading veteran manager Marco Vittozzi. “Tim had good command out there and was very efficient.”
He gave up only three hits, two walks and he fanned five Middie batters.
North Reading scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and their other two runs in the fifth.
The team had seven hits overall with no multiple hitters.

Jared McDonald had a two-run single in the fourth while Jack Fisher added an RBI single, also in the fourth. Mike Vittozzi had an RBI single in the fifth.
The Hornets scored their other two runs on errors in the fourth and fifth innings.
“The kids played well,” said Vittozzi.
Unfortunately, the bad news for the Hornets is that Wilmington beat Woburn by forfeit on Aug. 6 and were able to win the South division at 9-4-1.
Wilmington then lost to the North champions, Westford, 11-7, on Aug. 8 in Westford in the league title game. Westford finished at 10-1-2 overall.
Three of Wilmington’s wins this summer came by forfeit while only one of the Hornets wins came by forfeit.
“Overall, it was a very good season,” stated Vittozzi, who was proud of his team’s efforts.
