WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield High wrestling team held their final quad meet of the regular season on Saturday when they welcomed in Northeast Metro Tech, Saugus/Peabody and Lynn Vocational.
The Warriors swept the event, beating all three opponents to improve to 15-4 on the season.
Wakefield beat Lynn Vocational 30-0, winning all three contested meets via pins, Andrew Valley (1:01) at 126, Tommy Grover (2:33) at 132 and Nathan Ickes (:41) at 285.
The Warriors topped Northeast 54-27.
Gavin Bayers earned a pin in 53 seconds to tie it at 6-6. After Northeast got a pin at 120, the Warriors rattled off four straight pins to take a commanding 30-12 lead: Valley (2:29) at 126 followed by Grover (1:46) at 132, Oisin Cullen (2:46) at 138 and Sean Callanan (1:40) at 145.
The Golden Knights picked up 15 points in wins at 152, 160 and 170 but the Warriors finished strong with three pins and a forfeit to account for the final score.
Luke Ickes got a quick pin in 24 seconds at 182.
Joe Lamonica followed with a pin in 45 seconds at 195.
Ben Burdetsky got his pin in 1:29 at 220.
Wakefield’s toughest competition of the day came against Saugus/Peabody. The Warriors won it by a score of 48-24.
Once again it was the heavyweights who finished strong in the final four bouts to turn a 30-24 Warrior lead into a 48-24 final. Nathan Ickes (F, 2:23) and Lamonica (F, 3:35) each got 6 points with pins. Luke Ickes (DEC, 7-2) and Burdetsky (DEC, 12-9) each got 3 points with decisions.
Saugus/Peabody had four pins in a row from 145 to 170.
That made the matchup interesting after Wakefield won the first five bouts with four pins and a forfeit.
Bryan Fabbri got a pin in 1:10 at 120, Valley moved to 3-0 on the day with a pin in 48 seconds at 126, Grover moved to 3-0 with a pin in 4:22 at 132. Cullen got a pin at 138 in 1:05.
The Warriors certainly gained some momentum as they prepare for the Div. 3 North Sectional tournament which will be held at Tewksbury High on Saturday. Wakefield is one of 13 D3 North teams which includes league rivals Melrose, Watertown, Burlington and Wilmington.
