Big recycling event set for June 14

WAKEFIELD — State Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian will host her 4th annual Recycling & Sustainability Day for the Town of Wakefield, Saturday June 14, 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Wakefield Memorial High School. In partnership with the Wakefield Department of Public Works, Wakefield Municipal Gas & Light Department, and organizations local to the town, this one-day event is a unique hub that allows Wakefield residents to consciously clear clutter while making a difference and learning how to further their sustainability initiatives.

At the event, Wakefield residents can learn about existing programs and new Community Solar options with Wakefield Gas & Light, which also will collect and dispose dehumidifiers free of charge. Attendees can engage with a variety of local groups including Keep Wakefield Beautiful’s Warrior Clean Up Crew to learn about local cleanup efforts and the Wakefield Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC). ESC will be collecting coffee pods, school supplies, and used sports equipment for its August 2 sports swap; find more information on the group’s Facebook page.

With no fee per car, residents can recycle outdated electronics with peace of mind for proper data erasing with Green Team Junk Removal. Fees will be charged for certain items, including but not limited to TVs ($20), monitors ($20), window ACs ($10), mattresses ($50), box springs ($50), and car tires ($15 with rims or $12 without). Additional items will be collected by Green Team to be recycled for a fee. Residents also can recycle Styrofoam ($5 per full bag). Cash, card, and checks made payable to “Green Team Junk Removal” will be accepted. Questions can be directed to greenteamjunk@gmail.com or (508) 361-0519.

Residents further can bring the following household items to donate to Habitat for Humanity: dishware, kitchenware, pots and pans (must be clean and less than 5 years old), lamps, picture frames, and clean bedding (washed and bagged).

“I am excited to host again this keystone event, supporting and expanding civic engagement for climate action individually and collectivity while highlighting climate leadership from the grassroots to the State House,” said Lipper-Garabedian, the 2025 Keep Massachusetts Beautiful Environmental Legislator of the Year. “The hub offers a significant spring-cleaning opportunity with a focus on sustainability efforts and reaffirms our community’s commitment to addressing our climate crisis.”
