BOXFORD — On Monday afternoon, the Lynnfield High boys’ soccer team wrapped up its regular season as they visited Masconomet in a non-league match-up. The Pioneers ended up falling, 3-0 to the Chieftains who are one of the elite teams in the Northeastern Conference.

“They have a very good team and we were missing six of our players,” pointed out Pioneers head coach Brent Munroe. “I thought our players played hard but I was very impressed with Masco.”

The Chieftains scored twice in the first half netting goals in the 12th and 33rd minutes. Their final tally came in the 68th minute.

It was the fourth time the Pioneers have been shut out this fall, and the second game in a row they have not scored.

Pioneer goalkeeper, Dino Gesamondo, made nine saves.

Overall, the Pioneers finished at 10-3-5 while the Division 2 Chieftains, who are one division higher than Lynnfield, improved to 16-2.

In their final Cape Ann League game of the season on Oct. 23, the Pioneers were shut out by Pentucket, 2-0, up in West Newbury.

The Panthers were able to get a split of the season series as the Pioneers won the first meeting, 5-1, back on Sept. 22.

Lynnfield finished at 9-2-5 in the Cape Ann League as they came in second place in the CAL Kinney Division behind North Reading.

Sam Escobar scored both goals for the Panthers as he scored in the 25th and 70th minute.

“They are much-improved since the first time we played them,” acknowledged Munroe. “They outplayed us the entire game.”

Gesamondo made six stops in that game.

On Oct. 21, the Pioneers edged Amesbury, 2-1, on the road.

The Red Hawks struck first in the 16th minute.

Lynnfield then was awarded a penalty kick on a hand ball in the 30th minute and midfielder, Rocco Scenna, scored to tie it up.

In the 38th minute, John Powers scored the game-winning goal assisted by Adam Ayari on a crossing pass that Powers was able to put home.

“That was John’s best game of the year,” said Munroe, about the junior midfielder.

Gesamondo had four saves in that game.

Lynnfield entered this week ranked 25th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings.

The top 32 teams in each division, regardless of record, automatically qualify for the state tournament as the end of the regular season.

The playoffs won’t start until sometime next week so the Pioneers will host Reading in a scrimmage on Oct. 30 to stay sharp.
