WAKEFIELD — Superintendent David DiBarri is proud to recognize nine of the members of the Northeast Metro Tech wrestling team who distinguished themselves at the Massachusetts Vocational Wrestling Championships, including three athletes who won state championships, which includes Melrose’s very own Emilia Buggy.
Buggy won the state championship in the 114-pound weight class. The championship tournament was held Saturday, Jan. 25 at Greater Lowell Technical High School in Tyngsborough.
This culminates after a strong 10-5 varsity win season, which is pretty rare for a mere freshman. Her early training came from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from North Shore Martial Arts. And what’s best is that her season will continue. This weekend Buggy will compete in the MIAA Div. 2 States in a tough 113 class.
Over the season she has been joined with another Melrose native, junior Ray Anderson, who also competed for Northeast as a member of the team. Northeast Metro Tech had 25 student-athletes take part in the tournament, with nine turning in distinguished performances. The girls’ team finished third overall at the state tournament, while the boys team finished 10th out of 19 teams total.
“I’m extremely proud of the members of both our boys and girls wrestling teams for a great performance at the state vocational championships,” said Superintendent DiBarri. “They have every reason to be proud.”
