THE 1992 Melrose Little League 12-year-old All-Stars are celebrating their 25-year district 12 championship anniversary this week. They were the first Melrose Little League district champs since 1983, and the last since this year's 10 and 12-year-old All-Stars both won district 12 championships. The '92 team was managed by Mike Iudice. THE GATORS won the Spring 2017 Major League softball championship on June 18 with a perfect record of 14-0. The team, consisting of Melrose 5th and 6th grade girls, led by coaches Terry Tobin and Chris Sleeper, ended a great season on a high note. THE MELROSE REBELS (11-0) completed only the second undefeated season in the senior division in the last five years to win the senior title in the Melrose youth softball league. The Rebels only gave up 43 runs in 11 games, a mere 3.9 runs per game, thanks to solid pitching and defense. Congrats to the girls and to the coaches Anthony Grasso, Jay Centrella, Kevin Waden and Paul Abrego. SHAWN SMEGLIN has been a steady presence on the mound this year for the Americans with a 3.50 ERA. Smeglin (1-1) had his best start of the year June 28 against the Arlington Trojans as he went six innings, giving up three hits and no runs while striking out four. The Americans won the game 1-0.
