Celebrating a banner year for Melrose student musicians

CONCERT BAND

MELROSE — The Melrose High School Band, Chorus and Orchestra marked the close of a successful 2024-2025 school year with rousing concerts by each ensemble plus appearances in the annual “Celebrate the Arts” showcase.

The Melrose Band held their Spring Pops Concert at Memorial Hall on May 4 embracing the “May the Fourth” theme with a full-band performance of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The evening also featured the world premiere of Urban Loops, a fusion of electronic and traditional concert band music by Berklee professor Gabriele Venoni. It was a special final performance for the Class of 2025 band seniors.

For the Melrose Chorus, the May 7 Spring Concert showcased the newly established fourth and fifth grade Youth Chorus, the MVMMS choral ensembles for each grade plus the MVMMS Select Chorus and the Melrose High School Chorus and Honors Chorus. The 2024/2025 school year also featured the revival of the student-directed a cappella group aptly named “Red Hawkapella.”

 

CHORUS

The May 13 “Spring Strings” Orchestra concert kicked off with the “William Tell Overture” performed by the Youth Orchestra continued with performances by the MVMMS ensembles for each grade, and wrapped with the Melrose High School Orchestra, featuring an arrangement of music from “Wicked.”

In addition, three student musicians earned a spot in the prestigious All State Music Festival: Thomas Sweeney (Mallets-Band), Jonah Tully (Trombone-Orchestra) and Ella Gimenez (Alto-Chorus). These students performed among the best student musicians in the state this spring and auditioned through an extremely competitive process.
