MELROSE — The City of Melrose is entering into new contracts for trash and recycling collection and disposal, beginning on July 1, 2024. The new program will include automated pickup from the city’s new hauler, Casella Waste Systems.
Due to the city’s last contract having been negotiated over eight years ago, prices have changed dramatically, and the trash fee will be increasing accordingly. The new trash fee is anticipated to be roughly $370 per household per year. This reflects pricing based on competitive bidding and a lengthy negotiation process, to get the best deal for Melrose in the current marketplace.
This price is currently based on curbside recycling pickup every other week.
The city has the option of continuing weekly curbside recycling pickup, and they want your input! Please answer this survey, which discusses the frequency of curbside recycling pickup and the associated size of the recycling receptacles.
The city will be purchasing and distributing new wheeled carts (a.k.a. toters) to all customers. The additional cost per household to have weekly recycling pickup versus every other week is approximately $60/year, or $15/quarter.
