Election housekeeping reminder

This will be our final reminder on political housekeeping matters as the November 4 city election closes in.

The election is critically important, as most are. There will be a three-tiered Proposition 2 1/2 override question on the ballot and several people have already stepped forward to run for School Committee and City Council. We’d like candidates, their campaign people and those on either side of the override question to know the Weekly News is here for them.

Candidates can let readers know about themselves through what we call candidate statements. Several hopefuls have already done this, but we’d like every candidate to know of the opportunity. Head and shoulder photographs always make the candidate statements look better.

We also provide candidates with the chance to talk about the issues, in up to three letters to the Forum section.

Hopefuls’ supporters can send us letters too. We ask that everyone keep the discussion respectful. If you attempt to assassinate someone’s character, your letter won’t get printed. Supporters can send in as many letters as they’d like. Same with supporters and opponents of the override questions. The deadline for any Friday paper is Tuesday at 5 p.m.

One thing we’ve learned is that we can’t include photos with letters of candidate support; while appealing, they proved too cumbersome in the last mayoral race.

The last issue in which letters related to the November 4 election will appear is Friday, October 24. The deadline will be Tuesday, October 21 at 5 p.m.

Letters must be typed and signed by the author. A phone number for verification purposes only must also be included. Anonymous letters won’t be published.

The Weekly News reserves the right to edit letters for brevity, clarity or any libelous material.

The preferred way to receive letters to the editor is via email at melrosenews@wakefielditem.com. For those without email access, mail typed and signed letters to Melrose Weekly News, 26 Albion St., Wakefield, MA 01880.

If a candidate is having a campaign fundraiser or has any information regarding a fundraiser, we consider that advertising. If you want it in the paper, contact Chris Ellison at ads@wakefielditem.com

If you have any editorial questions, call Bob Burgess at 781-245-0080.
