Melrose (7-4) beats Arlington, 17-8

MELROSE—On May 1, the Melrose High girls’ lacrosse team beat guest Arlington, 17-8, at Fred Green Field on Senior Night. With that victory, Melrose improves to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the Middlesex League. Entering this week, Melrose is ranked No. 10 in the MIAA Division 2 power rankings. (The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the tournament.) As they head towards the final stretch of their regular season, it’s a great position for the team to be in.
“Arlington was a good, bounce-back win after we lost to Lexington,” said Melrose head coach Alicia Geiter. “Everybody got to play and it made for a memorable night for our six seniors.”
Before the game the six seniors were honored and Geiter played all six the entire game. They included Izzy Costello, Alex Leeman, Grace Durant, Nadia Santos, Maya Friedlaender and Jill Frawley.
Melrose got off to strong start as they led the Spy Ponders, 9-4, at the half. In the second stanza, they outscored them, 8-4. Anna Mathews led Melrose offense with ten points, as she had five goals and five assists. Right behind her was Jill Frawley who had five goals and three assists.
Chloe Arnold recorded a hat trick while Grace Daniels had four points with two goals and two assists.
Ella Daniels had one goal and one assist while Julia McNeely had the other Melrose tally. Melrose goalie Izzy Costello made six saves in net to improve to 7-4.
On Apr. 30, Melrose lost at Lexington by a final of 12-9.
“They have a good, strong team and they wanted it more than we did,” admitted Geiter, as the Minutemaids improved to 10-1 with the win.
Melrose scored the first goals of the game but were then outscored, 7-3, the rest of the first half to trail by two.
Lexington then outscored Melrose, 5-4, in the second half. Arnold led the offense in this game as the tenth-grader had six goals. Mathews had one goal and a team-high two assists. Grace Daniels and Frawley had the two other goals. Ward made six stops in this one.
On May 9, Melrose will visit Woburn at 4:00 p.m. They then welcome Beverly the next day for a non-league game that will start at 5:00 p.m. Melrose returns to Middlesex League action on May 13 as they visit Wilmington at 5:00 p.m. Melrose then has another non-league game on May 15 as they visit Methuen. That game will start at 5:00 p.m. as well.
