MELROSE — The Melrose Creative Alliance and the Melrose Chamber of Commerce are excited to announce a partnership with the City of Melrose to celebrate the city’s 175th birthday on Saturday, May 3. Kicking off at 10 a.m. with a celebration at Memorial Hall, the day will continue with a “waddle” through Melrose visiting the city’s cultural landmarks and local businesses. All Melrosians are invited to participate.
At the heart of the celebration is the family-friendly event “Make Way for Cygnets” inspired by the Friends of the Public Garden’s Duckling Day. Everyone is invited to dress as Melrose’s beloved swans and cygnets in a creative homage to Mel and Rose, the iconic swans of Ell Pond who have long been a symbol of community and togetherness in the city.
Michael Rosenberg, President of the Melrose Creative Alliance emphasized the vital role that arts and culture play in fostering a connected, thriving community: “When people come together to experience the arts, something magical happens. It deepens our sense of shared identity and belonging. Events like Melrose’s 175 Celebration and ‘Make Way for Cygnets’ not only celebrate our history but also drive the health, vibrancy and creativity that make Melrose such a special place to live.”
“Now more than ever, we need opportunities to come together and celebrate our shared experiences as a community. This 175th birthday celebration is a reminder of our resilience and the importance of gathering in joy especially as we navigate tough times.”
Stephanie Nelson, Executive Director of the Melrose Chamber of Commerce spoke to the economic benefits of this partnership: “When local businesses collaborate with arts and cultural activities, it creates an energy that draws people in. This event will be a fantastic opportunity for businesses to connect with both residents and visitors, strengthening our local economy while fostering a sense of pride in our community; and a great way to celebrate Melrose’s birthday.”
All promotion and event expenses for “Make Way for Cygnets” will be covered by the Melrose Creative Alliance and local business sponsors ensuring the community can participate in the celebration at no cost.
“Make Way for Cygnets” invites everyone to join in the fun, fostering a deeper connection between the city’s arts, businesses and its people. Modeled after events like Home for the Holidays and the Summer Stroll, it promises to promote civic pride, encourage tourism and celebrate the vibrant community spirit of Melrose.
