Cross country girls cruise past Raiders

WATERTOWN—The Melrose High girls cross country team came up victorious for their first win of the season after a 49-15 win over Watertown on the road on Sept. 16 at Arsenal Park. 

Melrose swept all top 6 spots to sprint to victory. Melrose’s Reilly Powell prevailed among all competition with a time of 18:52. 

She was followed in order by Naomi Breay, Dahlia Wilson, Violeta Rechea, Adelina Barnes and Ainsley Ludlum. Teagan Altman also cracked the top 10 with an 8th place finish. 

Melrose had a strong top to bottom finish with continued efforts by Audrey Davies, Mirabel Blanchard, Alexandra Kiatos, Zoe Audet, Amelie Christner, Audrey Kahandaliyanage, Paisley Barsotti, Eleanor Marston, Abigail Schad and Ava Wagoner. Rounding out finishes for Melrose was Dakota Digiorgio, Sophie Strileckis, Josie Cox, Isla Paulson, Jane Teittinen, Mae Donohue, Helen Morash, Abby Nersinger and Aamal Qureshi. 

Previously, Melrose had fallen to Winchester on Sept. 10 on the road at Horn Pond. But Melrose benefitted from the work of Reilly Powell who prevailed among all competition with a first place time of 18:53. Naomi Breay also cracked the top 5 with a finish of 19:25, earning points for Melrose. 

The team looks to make it two in a row when they host Stoneham on Tuesday at Pine Banks with a 4:15 start time.
