MELROSE—The Melrose High field hockey team enjoyed one of their most convincing wins in recent years on Sept. 5 when they soared to victory with a near shutout over rival Wakefield, 6-1 at Pine Banks Park, to start their season 1-1.

Melrose relied on a collective of goal-scorers, with Anna Sullivan and Zoe Blackburn scoring two apiece. Also finding the net were Elsie English, Callie Bolduc and Charlotte Taylor.

“Wakefield was a strong opponent and every year there is a certain rivalry that comes with playing them,” said Melrose head coach Olivia Cameron after the game. “They came out very strong and we knew we needed to capitalize on every opportunity early.”

Melrose took a quick lead of 4-0 in the first. “It was amazing start,” says the coach. “We then went on and scored 2 more in the second quarter and for the third and fourth we worked on passing around the field, transferring the ball, and looking up for our teammates.”

Melrose defense did the job behind the work of Lindsay Minton, Saoirse Uzgiris, Brynn Baker, Callie Bolduc and Charlotte Taylor. “They had great communication throughout the game and they were on their toes, ready for whatever Wakefield was going to do,” notes Cameron.

“And I was extremely pleased with the offense because last year we struggled with finding the back of the net but not this game,” she said.

As they prepare for additional Middlesex League play, including rival Burlington and Winchester on the road this coming week, Melrose has focused on adjusting aspects of their game, which was reflected in the win. “We started this game with a new formation and although the girls were a little nervous, they adapted to it right away and I am excited to keep working on it during practices. We have a few corners that seem to work and we still need to perfect some of our other ones. This was the type of game we could work on passing and moving with high pressure for the second half of the game and it was great to see how well they did with this.”
