LYNNFIELD — Despite the wet, cool conditions on Oct. 8, it was a successful Senior Day for the Lynnfield High girls’ cross country team as they beat visiting Amesbury, 25-31, to improve to 3-1 overall.
Senior, Abby Lopez, won the 2.9-mile race with a time of 19:28 while Maeve Wertz was third overall at 21:37.
Shea Moore came in sixth (22:35), Sophie Kennison (22:45), seventh and Bella Giacobbi placed eighth (22:56) to round out the top five.
“We knew it was going to be a close meet going in,” said Pioneers head coach Liane Cook. “This was the first real meet we had on a cool, rainy day so far this year. Despite the weather, all of our top five girls ran personal-best times for the length of the race.”
Before the race, the seven Pioneer 12th-graders were honored.
Last Saturday, the team traveled to Fort Devens in Ayer to compete in the Devens Pre-Championship Classic at Willard Field.
There were 82 total runners in this meet as Lopez was the lone Pioneer to medal with a time of 20:11 in the 3.1 mile course to capture 10th overall. That was a career-best time for her.
“She was nervous before the race,” pointed out Cook. “She ran really hard from the start and I was very proud of her. We were competing against schools that were much bigger than ours.”
Only the top 15 received medals.
Wertz finished 55th, also with a career best 5K time of 23:24.
Kennison was 68th (24:44) while Giacobbi came in right behind Kennison with a time of 24:45 for 69th.
Sarah Kaufman was fifth on the team with a time of 27:55.
Two Pioneer junior varsity runners also competed as Afsana Rabbani ran a career best 5K time of 28:29 while Audrey Janielis finished at 29:10.
“It wasn’t about a team score for this day,” said Cook. “This event was about previewing the site of the State Meet on Nov. 8 so the girls feel confident racing that day.”
On Oct. 15, the Pioneers look for win number four as they visit Hamilton-Wenham at 4 p.m. This is a make-up meet that was postponed a few weeks ago.
