IPSWICH — The Lynnfield High girls’ cross country team earned its first meet of the season on Sept. 17 as they won, 19-41, at Ipswich on a warm, sunny day. With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 1-1.

“Everyone ran a great race on a very challenging, hilly course,” said Pioneers head coach Liane Cook, whose runners took five of the top six spots. “It was pretty warm out but it did not negatively affect us.”

Senior co-captain, Abby Lopez, was the first runner to complete the 3.2-mile-course with a time of 22:27.

Junior co-captain, Maeve Wertz, was second on the team and third overall at 25:45. Senior Sophie Kennison captured fourth overall at 26.23.

Another senior co-captain, Shea Moore, was fourth on the team and fifth overall at 26.35. Senior, Lily Williams, placed sixth at 27.55.

Last Saturday, the Pioneers competed in the Frank Kelley Meet at Wrentham Development Center. The top performer was Lopez finishing 12th out of 87 runners in the 3,000-meters 12th grade race with a time of 11:49:52.

She was the team’s lone medalist as only the top 25 in each event medal.

“Abby got off a to a great start and was able to keep it up the entire race,” said Cook.

The next Lynnfield dual meet will be at Hamilton-Wenham on Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.

Lopez will also compete in the Bay State Invitational on Sept. 27 back in Wrentham as she will run in the 5,000-meters.
