MELROSE — It was a strong playoff opener for the Melrose High girls’ lacrosse team on Sunday as they beat guest Whitman-Hanson, 16-3, at Fred Green Field on a cool, breezy, evening.

With that victory, 9th-seeded Melrose improved to 14-4. Meanwhile, the 24th-seeded Panthers end the year at 8-8.

Melrose stormed out the gates scoring three times in the first 1:23.

“We were able to set the tone early,” said head coach Alicia Geiter. “I was happy with the way we came out.”

Melrose expanded the lead to 9-0 at the half as they were never threatened the rest of the way.

Sophomore Chloe Arnold led Melrose in goals with five while Jill Frawley also had a big night with four goals and a pair of assists.

Anna Mathews had a solid game as well with five points as she had a hat trick and two assists.

Julia McNeely was the team’s other multiple scorer with two goals.

Lauren Healy and Ella Daniels each had one goal and one assist to round out the scoring.

Melrose goalie, Izzy Costello, made six saves to improve to 14-4.

Shannon Balfe had all three Panther goals.

The Red Hawks visited Longmeadow in the Round of 16 on June 4 (result not available at press time).

Longmeadow, the 8th seed, entered that game with a record of 7-12.

If Melrose won that game, they would play at top-seeded Notre Dame of Hingham in the quarterfinals sometime this weekend.
