LYNNFIELD — On Sept. 25, the Lynnfield High girls’ soccer team shut out visiting Ipswich, 4-0, in the rain. With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 6-2 overall and in the Cape Ann League.

“With the new turf they put in this summer, the rain didn’t affect the play,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont.

Lynnfield took control of this game in the opening 40 minutes scoring three times.

The first tally came in the seventh minute as Ava Damiani broke the ice assisted by Sofia Giardina.

Six minutes later, Kaylee Barrett made it 2-0 with Damiani and Giada Antidormi both credited with the assists.

With just over two minutes in the first half, Bella Clancy made it 3-0 assisted by Barrett.

“It is usually a big goal when it is scored in the final five minutes,” said Vermont. “There is a big difference between a two-goal and a three-goal lead heading into the second half.”

Lynnfield then struck again only 17 seconds into the second half as Antidormi had the final goal of the afternoon. Giardina and Damiani both assisted.

With starting goalkeeper Victoria Minor out with an injury, Sabrina Hayman made her starting debut. The sophomore made two stops to record her first varsity win.

On Oct. 4, the Pioneers go to Byfield to take on Triton at 1:30 p.m.

Lynnfield is looking for the season sweep over the Vikings as they won the first meeting, 8-1, back on Sept. 4.

The Pioneers then visit Manchester-Essex on Oct. 7 with that game starting at 4 p.m.

On Sept. 26, the MIAA put out their first power rankings. Lynnfield was ranked 11th in Division 3.

“It is so early I don’t pay too much attention to the power rankings,” admitted Vermont.
