NORTH READING — After winning their first 13 games, most of them in dominating fashion, the North Reading High girls’ soccer team lost its first game of the season on Tuesday evening as they were edged by rival Lynnfield, 1-0, at home.

The Pioneers were able to split the season series as they lost to the Hornets, 2-0, back on Sept. 19.

With the defeat, the Hornets fell to 13-1 and 12-1 in the Cape Ann League. Lynnfield, meanwhile, improved to 10-2-1 overall and 10-2 in the CAL.

The lone goal of the night was by Kaylee Barrett 25:18 into the second half.

Hornet goalkeeper, Macy Kurchian, made five saves.

On Oct. 10, the Hornets shut out host Pentucket, 8-0, in West Newbury. It was the team’s fifth-straight shutout as they completed the season sweep over the Panthers, winning the first match-up, 5-0, on Sept. 10.

The Hornets scored five times in the first half.

Allie Lanciani had the first goal assisted by Reilly Tassinari 8:10 in.

Tassinari then headed in a corner kick by Belle Lazure to make it 2-0 at 13:37. Tassinari struck again at the 32:17 mark, assisted by Lanciani.

Kiersten Higgins had the fourth goal as Lanciani picked up her second assist at 35:07.

Alex Sfikas had the final goal of the first half assisted by Higgins with 4:50 remaining in the half.

In the third minute of the second half, Higgins made it 6-0 assisted by Tassinari.

At the 47:33 mark, Ariana Demetri found the back of the Panther net assisted by Sfikas.

Marisa Montana, assisted by Belle Lazure and Eva Cannalonga, had the final goal at the 66:20 mark.

Kurchian had another easy day in net having to make only one save for her 11th shutout of the year.

On Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m., the Hornets welcome Georgetown. They then host Hamilton-Wenham on Oct. 22 at 4:30 p.m.

North Reading entered this week ranked 7th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings.
