Girls’ tennis wins first CAL Kinney Division title since 2015

By DAN TOMASELLO

LYNNFIELD — With the regular season drawn to a close, the girls’ tennis team is now gearing up for the Division 4 state tournament.

Lynnfield’s match against Marblehead on May 21 was canceled due to rain.

“However, Manchester-Essex defeated Newburyport 3-2 on May 21 to give Lynnfield sole possession of the Kinney Division Cape Ann League championship,” said Pioneers head coach Craig Stone. “Lynnfield finishes with a league record of 11-2 and an overall record of 15-2.  Lynnfield last won a league championship in 2015.”

The Pioneers concluded the regular season by dismantling Rockport 5-0 on May 20.

Senior captain Paige Martino easily cruised past her first singles opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

“Paige was dominant at first singles, sweeping games in both sets,” said Pioneers head coach Craig Stone.

Junior Vicky McCrann got the start at second singles and won the match in three sets. McCrann won the first set 6-3, fell 2-6 during the second set and prevailed 10-8 during a third set super tiebreaker.

“Captain Lily Alves had the day off, so Vicky moved from first doubles to second singles to have the most competitive match of the day,” said Stone. “Vicky came from behind to win the first set, only to have her opponent play relatively error free tennis in the second set.  With the team match already decided, they played a 10-point tiebreaker for the match, which Vicky won 10-8. The match featured many long rallies with a contrast in styles, with Vicky pushing play and her opponent playing defense.”

Freshman Kami Khiat easily won her third singles match in two sets, 6-1, 6-0.

“Kami cruised at third singles by winning 12 out of 13 games,” said Stone.

Senior captain Ella Hayman and freshman Kathleen Brown won their first doubles match in consecutive sets, 6-1, 6-0.

“With Vicky moving to singles, Kathleen moved from second doubles to first doubles and partnered with Ella,” said Stone. “The newly formed tandem had little difficulty getting the win.”

Sophomore Emma Wagon and junior Victoria Clancy earned a decisive victory during second doubles, 6-0, 6-0.

“Emma and Victoria Clancy jumped in at second doubles,” said Stone. “The newly formed team has experienced quite a bit of success recently and May 20 was no different, as they won all 12 games.”

Stone said the Pioneers showed “some flexibility in their lineup” against the Vikings.

“Our team is very fortunate to have players with the talent and flexibility to play both singles and doubles, and play with multiple partners and still experience quite a bit of success this season while getting 16 different players into varsity matches,” said Stone.

The Pioneers are the number one seed in the Division 4 state tournament. Lynnfield will face either 32nd seed Uxbridge or 33rd seed Leicester in the Round of 32. To view the state tournament brackets, visit www.miaa.net.
