BOSTON — On Feb. 4, the Lynnfield High girls’ indoor track and field team participated in the Cape Ann League Meet at The Track at New Balance in Brighton.
The Pioneers finished in 9th place of 10 total schools with a score of 12 points. North Reading and Newburyport tied for first with 91 points each.
Abby Lopez had the top finish for the Pioneers with a personal-best time of 12:43.71 in the two mile to place fourth.
“This was the first time all season that she got to run this event on fresh legs,” pointed out Pioneers head coach Bill Wallace. “She has definitely had a breakout season and I am looking forward to how she does at the state meet.”
The most successful event for the girls was the high jump as two Pioneers placed in the top eight to score points. Clara Caulfield finished 6th overall at 4’8” while Christine Choi ended up at 4’6” to capture 8th.
The 4×400 relay team also placed 6th overall with a time of 4:38.90, which also was a season-best. The Pioneer runners in that event were Lily Rocco, Emma Greenleaf, Sophia Morgese and Sofia Giardina.
While they missed out on scoring, there were also a few other personal-records in the meet.
Greenleaf got a PR in the 55 hurdles with a time of 10.07 while Caulfield also got a PR in this event with a time of 10.12.
“Clara has been a great team leader and captain all season so I was happy to see her finish with such a great time,” said Wallace.
Giardina also had a solid night in her first CAL Championship. Besides anchoring the 4×400 relay team she had a PR in the 55 (8.07) and another PR in the 300 with a time of 45.81.
“She has had a tremendous first season and I am looking forward to her competing at a high level over the next few years,” said Wallace.
The next event for the Pioneers will be on Feb. 16 at the MIAA Division 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships. That event will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston and will start at 1 p.m.
In the regular season, the Pioneers went 2-2 as they finished in third place in the CAL Baker Division.
