Host girls’ track team wins 10th straight MSTCA state relay title

NORTH READING — The Hornets hosted this year’s annual MSTCA Relay Championships for Division 5. Despite the difficulty of hosting the event, which requires a lot of work and focus from the entire team, the girls were still able to focus on the goal at hand which was winning a 10th consecutive State Relay Championship with 86 points, well ahead of second place Dennis Yarmouth (65 points) and third place Triton (48 points). Rounding out the top 10 were Cardinal Spellman (40), Weston (33), Norwell (32), Dedham (31), Bellingham (28), Pentucket (24.48) and Medfield (24) with a total of 31 teams competing.

The Hornets had four winning teams scoring 10 points each: The 1600 Sprint Medley Relay, the 4×100 Shuttle Hurdle Relay, the High Jump Relay and the Pole Vault Relay, scoring 40 of the 86 points.

The 1600 SMR made up of Julia Scammon, Madison Forbush, Callie MacLellan and Giuliana Ligor won with a winning time of 4:15.42, which set a new school record and just missed the meet record by two seconds.

The 4×100 SHR made up of Ligor, Callie MacLellan, Katie Zimmerman and Hayden MacLellan ran 1:02.36 which set a new school record and new meet record.

The High Jump Relay of Callie MacLellan, Lindsey Cook and Giuliana Auciello set a new school record at 4.44m.

The Pole Vault team of Hayden MacLellan, Chloe DeAngelis and Alanna Hannon set a new Meet Record of 7.48m.

The Discus Throw Relay made up of Maria Karafilidis, Miriana Bornstein and Erin Dee took 2nd place for 8 points with Maria clearing the 90 foot mark with her best throw. She came back in the Shot Put Relay with another personal best going over 27′ and was joined by Jackie Genzler and Annika Molla for a 6th place finish and 3 points. Wrapping up the throwing events for the Hornets was the Javelin Throw Relay made up of Sophia Gallivan, Jackie Genzler, and Sophie Boudoya which took 4th place for 5 points.

In the Long Jump and Triple Jump both teams added to the Hornet dominance in the vertical jumps. The Long Jump had an A and B team with the A team made up of Giuliana Ligor, Hayden MacLellan, and Sophia Gallivan taking 2nd place for 8 points and the B team made up of Kate Denehy, Katie Zimmerman, and Shea Farmer taking 6th place for 3 points. The Triple Jump Relay made up of Kate Denehy, Lindsey Cook and Chloe DeAngelis took 3rd place for 6 points.

On the track, the Hornets scored an additional 13 points in the 4x100m Relay, 4000m Distance Medley, and 4x1600m Relay.  The  4x100m Relay made up of Julia Scammon, Sophia Gallivan, Kate Denehy and Katie Zimmerman ran a season best time of 52.16, good enough for 8th place and 1 point and good enough to qualify for the state championship. The 4000m DMR made up of Paige Vant, Shea Farmer, Abigail Meier, and Quinlan Kelly took 5th place for 4 points. The 4x1600m Relay made up of Quinlan Kelly, Riley MacDonald, Adelyn Kelly, and Paige Vant took 2nd place and 8 points.
