OWEN CONSIDINE

LYNNFIELD — The Cape Ann League boys’ hockey coaches recently had their All-Star meeting and two members of the Lynnfield High team were named to the roster: senior co-captains, Owen Considine and Jay Carpenter. It is the first All-Star appearance for both players.

Considine, a forward, led the team in goals (22) and assists (15) as he finished with 37 points.

“He knew going into the season that, with the seniors we lost last year, he was going to have to shoulder the load on offense,” said Pioneers head coach Jon Gardner. “He was involved in 70 percent of our scoring which is astronomical.”

Considine is looking into playing junior hockey next year after graduation.

Carpenter spearheaded the Pioneers’ defense this winter as the blue-liner led the team in blocked shots.

“He is a very smart, stay-at-home defenseman,” said Gardner. “He led our penalty kill and was very consistent.”

This winter, the Pioneers reached the MIAA Division 3 Round of 16  before losing, 4-1, to host Medfield at the Pirelli Veterans Arena in Franklin on March 1.

Lynnfield ended up at 10-12 overall.

In the Cape Ann League, Lynnfield went 5-5 as they came in 4th place in the CAL Kinney Division.

Last week, Gardner gave out eight awards at the team’s end-of-season banquet.

Consdine led the way taking home two awards, the MVP and Passion Awards.

The Sparks Award went to Carpenter.

Brendan Driscoll, a junior defenseman, received the Mike Dalton Work Ethic Award while fellow junior defenseman, Nick Kelter, picked up the Selflessness Award.

The Pioneer Pride Award was given to sophomore forward, Andrew Carbone.

Junior forward, Anthony Calla, received the Mental Toughness Award.

The Vladimir Svetchnikov Award for the team’s top junior varsity player went to freshman forward Parker Burek.

“They reached my expectations,” said Gardner, who finished his 13th-year at the helm. “We lost a lot of players from last year’s team but I was proud how hard this team worked and never quit.”

The Pioneers will lose just two seniors, Considine and Carpenter, to graduation.

“Jay was a four-year player while Owen was a three-year player,” pointed out Carpenter. “They both leave a lasting impression on our program and will be sorely missed.”

Next year, the expectations will be high as the team is slated to return over 20 veterans.

“With all of the kids that played this year it will pay dividends for next season,” said Gardner.

The captains for next winter were also picked and they will be Calla, Kelter, Carbone, Mike Marenghi (goalie) and Sam Curley (forward).

Calla and Kelter will be the captains while Carbone, Marenghi and Curley will be the assistant captains.
