Joan LaGrega, 73

Enjoyed the pleasure of daily walks and passion for Aruba cruises

MELROSE — Joan LaGrega, age 73, passed away at the Westford House August 15 following a valiant struggle against Parkinson’s disease and Dementia. She was the widow of Robert LaGrega who passed away in March of this year.

Born to the late Walter Callahan and the late Dorothy (Cronin) Callahan in Somerville, where she spent her formative years, received her education and enjoyed marching with the color guard. It was in Melrose that she found the joys of motherhood and established her own family, leaving an indelible mark on the community for over three decades. In 2007, she relocated to Lowell with her husband.

She had an affinity for exploring her neighborhood on foot, relishing the simple pleasure of daily walks. Beyond her immediate surroundings, she held a passion for cruises with Aruba holding a special place in her heart. Camping under the stars was another of her cherished pastimes, where she found solace in nature’s embrace.

Above all, Joan treasured the moments spent with her beloved family. Her children: Maureen Hackett of Lowell; Robert LaGrega and his wife Michele of Lowell; her grandchildren: Kayla LaGrega; Megan LaGrega; Emily LaGrega; Annie LaGrega; Logan Hackett; and Brendan Hackett; and her great granddaughter: Winter Almonte brought immeasurable joy to her heart. Her three brothers: Walter Callahan Jr. and his wife Nancy of FL;, William Callahan and his wife Donna of PA; and Robert Callahan and his wife Sheryl of NC. Joan’s expansive circle of family extended to a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many close friends, each touched by her kindness and warmth. 

Her calling hours were on Tuesday, August 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland St., Lowell, MA 01852. Her funeral was held on Wednesday at the funeral home at 9 a.m., her Funeral Mass took place at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lowell at 10 a.m. followed by burial in the Lowell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Alzheimer’s Association of Massachusetts/New Hampshire, 309 Waverly Oaks Rd., Waltham MA 02452.
