Update after press time: Melrose defeats Arlington 17-8 on Senior Night (May 1)

MELROSE—On Monday April 28, the Melrose High girls’ lacrosse team edged guest Wayland, 16-14, at Fred Green Field on a warm, sunny day. With that non-league victory, Melrose improved to 6-3.
Melrose started of slowly as the Warriors led 4-1 after the first quarter. However, the host rebounded, outscoring Wayland, 8-2, in the second quarter to go up 9-6 at the half.
“We had a really good second quarter,” stated Melrose head coach Alicia Geiter. “From that point, the game was back-and-fourth.”
Anna Mathews led Melrose’s attack with a career-high 11 points as she had eight goals and three assists. “She was lights out,” stated Geiter about the attacker. Jill Frawley also had a big day with seven points as she had five goals and two assists. Sophomore Chloe Arnold recorded her 100th-career goal as she had the one goal and added one assist. Lauren Healy and Julia McNeely had the two other goals.

Melrose goalie Izzy Costello made six saves in net to go to 6-3.
“This was a big bounce-back win after we lost to Reading,” said Geiter. “Beating a team like that will help us in the power rankings. We also beat them last year as well.”
Wayland (5-4) plays in the Dual County League, which is one of the elite leagues in the state.
On Apr. 25, Melrose lost 18-6 at Reading. With that defeat Melrose fell to 3-2 in the Middlesex League.
“They are the best team in the league,” stated Geiter, as Reading improved to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in the ML. “They look as strong as they did last season.”
Up 3-2 after the first quarter, the Rockets took command in the second outscoring Melrose 9-3 in the second.
“They took control of the game in the second quarter,” acknowledged Geiter. “They were able to control a lot of the draws.”
Grace Daniels led the Melrose offense with three goals while McNeely had three assists to go with one goal. Arnold and Mathews had the two otter goals. Costello turned back eight shots on net.
The next game for Melrose will not be until May 9 as they visit Woburn at 4:00 p.m. as they have a seven-day gap in between games.
