LYNNFIELD — In their regular-season finale last Saturday in non-league action, the Lynnfield High girls’ soccer team tied Marblehead, 1-1, at home on a sunny, cool day.
With that result, the Pioneers finished the year at 13-2-3 overall. The Magicians, meanwhile, went to 11-1-2.
“They have an excellent program and play in a very good league (Northeastern Conference),” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont. “This is the type of team you want to play in a non-league match in order to get ready for the state tournament.”
After a scoreless opening half, the Pioneers broke the ice in the sixth minute of the second half as Ava Damiani scored assisted by Kaylee Barrett.
Marblehead tied it 11 minutes later as Sadie Halpern’s high line-drive shot just went under the crossbar to tie the game.
“It was a very good shot,” admitted Vermont.
Both teams had some good chances late but no team was able to score the rest of the way.
Victoria Minor was the Pioneer goalkeeper in this game as she made six saves to go to 10-2-2 in net.
“It was a very physical game as the officials let both teams play,” said Vermont.
In their final Cape Ann League game of the season on Oct. 23, the Pioneers blanked Pentucket, 5-0, at home to complete the season sweep over the Panthers.
They also won a share of the CAL Kinney Division crown as they tied for first place with Newburyport.
“That was a very big win for us,” stated Vermont. “We came in second place in the league last year after winning it two years ago.”
LHS took command of the game early scoring four times in the opening half.
Giada Antidormi bent a corner kick that went off a Panther defender into the net in the seventh minute for the game’s first goal.
In the 18th minute, midfielder Bella Sykes made it 2-0 with Antidormi assisting.
Three minutes later, Barrett made it 3-0 with Sykes and Hannah Ozanian both assisting.
“That was some great passing on that goal,” pointed out Vermont.
Sykes then found the back of the Panther net again in the 26th minute with Damiani picking up the assist.
Antidormi had the second-half tally in the 20th-minute with Damiani having her second helper.
“Bella had a great game and our defense played well,” said Vermont.
Minor posted the shutout making four stops.
On Oct. 21, the Pioneers pounded Amesbury, 7-1, at home.
“They are a young, rebuilding team this year,” said Vermont, about the winless Red Hawks.
Damiani was the star in this one as the junior striker had a career-high four goals.
“She is a dynamic player and a good finisher,” said Vermont, whose squad led, 5-0, at the half.
Barrett also had a big day with one goal and three assists while Antidormi also had three assists.
Ozanian and Ella Pascucci had the other LHS goals.
Sabrina Hayman was the Lynnfield goalkeeper in this game and she had two stops to go to 3-0-1.
The Pioneers entered this week ranked sixth in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings which will give them the opportunity to host the first two playoff games should they advance.
The seedings will come out later this week and Lynnfield should open the states sometime in the middle of next week.
Because of the gap between games, the Pioneers scrimmaged Masconomet on Oct. 28 and will also scrimmage Danvers at home on Oct. 30.
