LYNNFIELD — A familiar face is the Lynnfield Police Department’s newest patrolman.
The Select Board unanimously voted to appoint former Department of Public Works employee Nick Goodwin as a Police Department patrolman during last week’s meeting. Police Chief Nick Secatore said Goodwin grew up in town, and graduated from Lynnfield High School as a member of the Class of 2008.
“We are here to recommend Nick’s appointment as a Lynnfield police officer,” said Secatore. “Nick received an associate’s degree from North Shore Community College. He spent 10 years working for the Lynnfield DPW in a supervisory capacity. All of his colleagues spoke very highly of him. We feel the same. They feel loss. We feel gain.”
Secatore said Goodwin will be a positive addition to the Police Department.
“For the town of Lynnfield, this is a step up and a step in the right direction,” said Secatore. “We are getting a police officer who has a very good demeanor. Nick is very good at speaking with people and explaining things to them. That is a huge gain for not only the Police Department, but also the town at large. We are very excited to have him.”
Secatore said Goodwin was “selected from the candidates on the Civil Service list.”
“Town Administrator Rob Dolan and I selected him,” said Secatore. “He has been a consistent employee for the town of Lynnfield.”
Goodwin’s family, including his wife Meaghan and two daughters, attended the Select Board’s meeting to watch him get appointed as the Lynnfield Police Department’s newest patrolman. He was smiling from ear-to-ear during the meeting.
“I would like to thank my family for their continued support,” said Goodwin. “I would like to thank Chief Secatore and the entire Lynnfield Police Department for giving me this opportunity. I grew up in Lynnfield and I have worked for the town for the past 10 years. I can’t wait to start this new journey.”
Secatore said Goodwin was touched that his family was able to attend the meeting to see him get appointed as a Lynnfield police patrolman.
“It’s a joyous event,” said Secatore. “We are glad that Nick’s family can be here to see him get appointed.”
Select Board member Dick Dalton said he and his colleagues always enjoy appointing new police officers.
“I would like to congratulate you,” said Dalton. “As the chief knows, this board has emphasized hiring Lynnfield men and women to join the police force. As someone who grew up here and has worked for the DPW, you are a great success story. You have a lot to be proud of and we are proud of you.”
Select Board member Phil Crawford agreed.
“There is nothing that gives us more joy than appointing young people who grew here,” said Crawford. “You and Meaghan grew up with my daughters, and I have known you since you were little. It’s great to see you flourish, become successful and stay here in town. I cannot thank you enough for coming forward and taking this position. Best of luck with it.”
Select Board Chairman Joe Connell also expressed his support for appointing Goodwin as a police patrolman. He also joked that the town was building a new police station for him.
After the discussion, the Select Board voted 3-0 to appoint Goodwin as the Lynnfield Police Department’s newest patrolman. He was given a round of applause by the meeting’s attendees.
“Congratulations,” said Connell.
Goodwin thanked the Select Board for appointing him as a police patrolman. He began his tenure last week.
Special police officer appointed
The Select Board also appointed retired Danvers Police Capt. Philip Tansey as a special police officer. He will be working as a detail officer.
“Phil recently retired from the Danvers Police Department,” said Secatore. “He is willing to help us in the area of traffic control, which is an area we need help with due to the big projects going on in town.”
