LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High baseball team continued their terrific state tournament run on their home field with a 3-1 victory over Stoneham in the Round of 16 and an 8-2 win over Northbridge in the quarterfinals.

The No. 2 Pioneers will take on No. 3 Hamilton-Wenham in the Div. 4 Final Four tonight, 7 p.m. at Fraser Field in Lynn.

Lynnfield (19-4) got it going early against the No. 18 Spartans (8-14) on Thursday at LHS, plating 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning.

As it turned out, that’s all the Pioneers would need as starting pitcher Madux Iovinelli carried the Pioneers with a gem of a start, allowing 5 hits and just 1 run while walking 4 and striking out 5 in 6 innings to earn the win. Luke DiSilvio shut it down in the 7th to earn the save and the Pioneers celebrated a hard-earned trip to the Elite 8.

Lynnfield’s 3 runs in the 1st all came with two outs as Iovinelli started it up with a walk. The Spartans decided to intentionally walk both DiSilvio and Walter Radulski to load the bases.

Drew George made them pay for that one.

George came through with a clutch, bases-clearing double to make it 3-0 in one swing of the bat and get the home fans into it.

Iovinelli worked around two singles in the 2nd, getting a groundout to end the threat. He did the same in the 3rd, brushing aside a walk and an error, ending things with a fly out and line out.

Still up 3-0, Lynnfield turned a double play to end the top of the 4th. With one out and runners at first and second, the Spartans tried a bunt to move the runners but Iovinelli was ready, throwing to Radulski at third for one before Radulski — with a pitcher’s power — hummed it across the diamond to Matt Tracy at first for a huge double play.

While Lynnfield’s bats continued to stall, Stoneham cut into the lead, making it 3-1 in the 5th after a hit batter and two straight singles. Iovinelli buckled down from there, limiting damage by racking up two strikeouts and a pop up.

The hard-throwing southpaw ended his day with two more strikeouts in the 6th, earning an ovation from the crowd as he walked off the mound with a 3-1 lead in tact.

DiSilvio sat the Spartans down in order in the 7th, a strikeout and two groundouts officially ending another quality state tournament win.

Lynnfield took on No. 10 Northbridge in the Elite 8 on Sunday afternoon back at LHS.

It was another tense matchup as the visiting Rams actually took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th. That’s where the Pioneers took over, plating four runs to make it 5-2 before adding on three more in the 6th, running away with it.

DiSilvio was terrific in a complete game victory, allowing just 4 hits and no earned runs while walking 3 and striking out 10.

Leading the way offensively was Nick Groussis out of the No. 2 spot. He went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Ty Adamo also had a great day out of the leadoff spot, going 2-for-2 with a home run, 2 hits, 2 walks, 3 runs scored and an RBI.

Northbridge scratched across a run in the 1st after an error in the infield scored a runner from second base. DiSilvio later escaped a bases loaded jam with a clutch strikeout.

The Pioneers got the run back in the bottom half on a leadoff solo shot by Adamo, getting the Lynnfield dugout into it early.

DiSilvio settled in, racking up three strikeouts in the next two innings.

Two more errors in the infield allowed the Rams to go up 2-1 in the top of the 5th. DiSilvio once again did a great job of limiting damage by getting three consecutive outs to end it.

Lynnfield’s 4-run 5th, the inning that essentially punched their ticket to the Final Four, began by Dylan Nguyen being hit by a pitch. Charlie Morgan bunted him over, Nguyen stole third and Adamo walked, setting up Groussis, who reached on a squeeze bunt that scored Nguyen and tied the game. Lynnfield took the lead for good when Iovinelli followed with an RBI single.

Later with two outs, Radulski ripped a 2-RBI double to center field to make it 5-2.

A 2-RBI double by Groussis and an RBI single by DiSilvio accounted for the three runs in the 6th as the Pioneers cruised to Final Four.

Lynnfield will meet a familiar foe in Hamilton-Wenham on Wednesday at Fraser. The Generals were one of the few teams to beat Lynnfield this season, winning a 7-6 thriller on April 17. Lynnfield beat Hamilton-Wenham 7-0 in their only matchup last season.

The Generals beat No. 30 Blue Hills (3-0), No. 19 Cohasset (5-1) and No. 11 Dennis-Yarmouth (1-0) to reach the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 5 Millbury is in the Final Four awaiting the winner of No. 1 Pittsfield vs. No. 9 Uxbridge who played on Tuesday night after press time.
