LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield 12-year old Williamsport baseball team was eliminated in the District 16 tournament recently after two hard-fought games. Both matchups were tight, low-scoring affairs.
On June 27, Lynnfield was edged, 3-2, by Saugus at Hurd Ave. Field in Saugus.
Although the game was in Saugus, Lynnfield was the home team.
Both teams scored twice in the first inning but Saugus scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning for the game winner.
“In both games we pitched well,” pointed out Lynnfield manager Sam White. “We just didn’t hit and we have a good-hitting team.”
Lynnfield had four hits in this one led by Keegan McLaughlin who went 2 for 3 with one run scored. Luke Hudson had an RBI double and Brett McMillan had the other RBI on a ground out to first.
Nolan Dubois was the losing pitcher in relief going in the final 3.2 innings. He gave up the one unearned run, two hits and he struck out four.
The Lynnfield starter was McMillan who went 2.1 innings. He gave up two runs (one earned), one hit and struck out five.
“Both of them pitched well,” said White. “What makes it tough is that we beat them, 16-5, last year and 18-2, two years ago.”
In the first game of the tournament on June 22, Lynnfield lost to Peabody, 4-1, at Wyoma Field in Lynn. Lynnfield was the visiting team in this game.
“Their pitcher (Adam Grant) is the best in the district,” stated White. “He has a fastball around 70 miles-per hour and a great curveball.”
Lynnfield had just three hits which were all singles. The three players to get hits were McLaughlin, Alex Nisenbaum and Matt Mattia.
Peabody scored once in the bottom of the first inning and three more times in the fourth.
The lone Lynnfield run was scored in the top of the fourth on a ground out to first by Zack Mancinelli that plated the run.
McMillan, the starter, was the losing pitcher going 3.2 innings. He gave up four runs (three earned), three hits, two walks and he fanned seven. Dubois pitched the final 1.1 innings not allowing a run.
Grant, meanwhile, pitched a no-hitter against Peabody West in a, 7-0 win.
