GEORGETOWN — On a wet, cool day on Monday afternoon, the  Lynnfield High girls’ lacrosse team beat Georgetown, 21-12, on the road.

With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the Cape Ann League. The Royals, meanwhile  fell to 0-11 overall and 0-7 in the league.

Lynnfield took command right away as they were up 9-1 after the first quarter and never looked back.

“Everybody got to play and get significant playing time,” said Lynnfield head coach Christina Serra.

Taylor Valiton led the Pioneers in scoring with six goals while her younger sister, Hayden, netted four.

Ava Damiani also had a big day with five goals and one assist while Jordan Calichman had two goals and a team-high three assists.

Single Lynnfield goals were scored by Chloe Gromko, Alex Schmidt, Hannah Ozanian and Laura Flaws.

Pioneer goalie, Olivia Sylvester, made 10 saves.

Last Friday, the Pioneers beat rival North Reading, 15-11, on the road. That win allowed the Pioneers to keep the Samson-Pepe Trophy for another year.

The key to the win took place in the third quarter as the Pioneers outscored the Hornets, 6-0, to go up 14-8 as the game was knotted at eight at the half.

“We started to win the draws and picked it up in that third quarter,” pointed out Serra.

Hayden Valiton erupted for seven goals and she had one assist. Taylor Valiton had five points with three goals and two assists while Damiani also scored three times to go with one assist.

Calichman had one goal and a pair of helpers while Gromko had the other goal.

Schmidt had a team-high three assists while Lily White had one assist.

Sylvester turned back eight Hornet shots.

That win snapped a five-game losing streak.

On April 29, the Pioneers fell to Hamilton-Wenham, 15-12, at home as the Generals completed the season sweep.

“We played them much better than the first time this year,” said Serra, as the Generals won the first meeting, 16-5, back on March 30. “Their star (Evie Bernard) was the difference.”

Bernard, a junior who will be playing at Penn after she graduates, scored seven goals in this game.

Lynnfield led at halftime, 9-8, but they were outscored, 7-3, in the second stanza.

Hayden Valiton had five goals and one assist while her sister had four goals and one assist.

Damiani had two goals while Gromko had one goal and one assist.

White and Calichman each chipped in one assist.

Sylvester made 14 saves.

“They did a good job of controlling the draws in the second half,” added Serra.

The Pioneers visit Ipswich on May 7 at 4:30 p.m. They then visit Danvers on May 9 at 4 p.m. in a non-league game.

Lynnfield returns to CAL action on May 13 as they visit Newburyport. That game will be under the lights at 7 p.m.

The Pioneers entered this week ranked 17th in the MIAA Division 4 power rankings. The top 32 teams, regardless of overall record, automatically qualify for the state tournament.
